Celebrate 200 Years of Railways and Inspire the Engineers of the Future

The Gravesend Railway Enthusiasts Society (GRES) is thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for secondary schools in and around Gravesend to mark 200 years of trains and the 50th Gravesend Model Railway Show, we are inviting schools to take part in the Next Generation Railway Builders Challenge. This unique competition blends creativity, engineering, and teamwork.

What is the Next Generation Railway Builders Challenge?

This hands-on competition allows students to design and build a themed model railway layout using a Hornby Starter Set, provided by GRES. Working in teams of 5 students, participants will explore railway history, develop STEM skills, and showcase their work at the Gravesend Model Railway Show on November 1st–2nd, 2025.

Why Should Your School Get Involved?

🚂 Encourages STEM learning – Hands-on experience with design, mechanics, and problem-solving.
🎨 Boosts creativity – Develop a unique theme, scenery, and storytelling aspect.
🤝 Builds teamwork & leadership – Collaborative roles help students develop responsibility and communication.
🏆 Showcase at a prestigious event – The final layouts will be displayed and judged at the Gravesend Model Railway Show, with prizes for outstanding entries.

📅 GRES Family Day (Optional Intro Session): June 22, 2025 View event here
📦 Materials Provided: Hornby Starter Set, delivered in September 2025
🛠 Project Work Period: September–October 2025
📍 Final Presentation & Judging: November 2nd, 2025, at Northfleet School for Girls, Hall Road, Northfleet, Gravesend, DA11 8AQ.

How to Enter

To register your school, simply complete the sign-up form using the link below. The deadline for registration is July 31st, 2025. Spaces are limited, so don’t miss out!
